How to manually enroll Android devices

Learn to enroll Android devices using a QR code.

Written by Mithra Ravikrishnan

SuperOps MDM allows you to manually enroll Android devices using a QR code, providing a straightforward onboarding process. This method supports distinct management modes to accommodate your organization's needs:

  • Fully Managed: For company-owned devices, giving you complete control over the device and its policies.

  • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device): For personal devices, which creates a secure work profile to keep company data separate and protected while respecting user privacy. All apps, policies and controls will only apply to the work profile.

  • Android Kiosk : For company-owned devices dedicated to a single purpose. Locks the device to one public app from the Play Store, ensuring users can only interact with that app and nothing else on the device.

Navigate to the Settings->MDM configuration. Once you configure Android Enterprise with SuperOps, you will be able to start the Manual enrollment process.

Enrolling a fully managed (Company-Owned) device

This mode is for devices owned by your organization and requires the device to be factory reset before enrollment.

  1. In the MDM Installer window, ensure the Fully managed option is selected. Select the corresponding Site and Requester and click Generate QR. A unique QR code and instructions will be displayed.

  2. Now, on the Android device, the user needs to complete the following steps:

    1. Ensure the device has been factory reset.
    2. On the device's 'Welcome' screen, tap six times anywhere to launch the QR code setup.
    3. Connect to a Wi-Fi network when prompted.
    4. Scan the QR code you generated in SuperOps to begin the provisioning process.

These instructions can also be sent by email to the user.

Note: During Android enrollment, the assigned Android Policy set ( Settings->Policy sets ) will automatically apply. Any apps configured under App Management will install as part of this process, and the setup can be completed only after these apps finish installing.

Enrolling a BYOD (Personal) device

This mode allows employees to securely use their personal devices for work by creating an isolated work profile.

  1. In the MDM Installer window, select the BYOD option and click Generate QR. A new QR code and a different set of instructions will be generated for work profile setup.

  2. The end-user needs to follow these steps on their personal Android device:
    1. Open the Google Play Store, then search for and install the 'Android Device Policy' app.
    2. Launch the Android Device Policy application.
    3. The app will open a scanner. Use it to scan the enrollment QR code from SuperOps.
    4. If prompted, enter the validation code shown in the instructions.
    5. Follow the on-screen prompts to create a work profile and complete the setup.

Enrolling an Android Kiosk Device

Please follow these steps to generate a QR code and manually enroll your Android kiosk device:

  1. Navigate to the Android Kiosk settings page and select the Manual Enrollment tab.

  2. Under the Enroll Device as section, select the KIOSK radio button.

  3. Fill in the required configuration details, including the Site, Device Category, and Associated Requester. Please review these settings carefully before proceeding.

  4. If you wish to keep the pre-installed system apps on the enrolled device, check the Retain system apps box. By default, Android disables pre-installed system apps during kiosk enrollment. We recommend enabling this if your kiosk app depends on any of these services to function correctly.

  5. Once all settings are configured, click the Generate QR button.

  6. A QR code will be generated and displayed. You can now use the target Android device to scan this QR code and complete the kiosk enrollment process.

Once enrolled, the device will appear in your asset list and is ready to be managed according to the policies you've set.
